NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — More than a hundred police officers and dozens of police dogs gathered in honor of a Norfolk K-9 killed in the line of duty.
The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/1Uaf3Se) a memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan 19, for Krijger, a Norfolk Police Department K-9, who was shot and killed Jan. 11 during a police stand-off.
The 4-year-old Belgian Malinois had been in service for three years with the police department.
Police say 58-year-old Keith Richardson shot Krijger after barricading himself inside a home for several hours. Krijger was later pronounced dead at a veterinarian’s office.
Richardson, who was shot by police officers, died two days later.
Krijger was one of 17 police dogs in Norfolk’s K-9 unit.
K-9 Unit Sgt. Ron Godwin says Krijger helped make over 30 felony arrests in his career.
