Every year, the public, students, organizations, and faculty members are welcome to participate in the Martin Luther King, Jr. walk. This year at Norfolk State was no different.

During this walk, students had the chance to bond with one another by coming together and walking to show respect for the accomplishments of not only Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but all African-Americans who made history and helped pave the way for minorities today.

This event is treasured because it inspires and uplifts the spirit of equality for everyone, while getting the community involved. Many organizations across campus gather together to walk while holding their organization’s banner to show full support of this very important day.

At 11:45 a.m. faculty members cancelled classes temporarily to allow every student and faculty member the full ability to get involved in this historic day. The starting line this year was at the campus’s new focal point: the communication tower.

From there, everyone gathered in line, which was led by the university’s national award-winning drum line, the “Million Dollar Funk Squad.” From here, the drum line played music while the walk continued around campus.

While the walk was passing traffic, participants could hear the horns of cars passing showing support for the historic walk. Ending the walk at Douglas L. Wilder Performing Arts Center was not the end of the event. Everyone was surprised to be able to enjoy an inspirational and educational played named “The Road Less Traveled” performed by the Norfolk State University Theatre Company.

The goal of this event was to lift spirits in supporting and spreading the knowledge of Dr. King’s legacy. From the students to the faculty members, everyone was able to participate and be involved in this positive event.
