NORFOLK, Va. – A pair of Norfolk State University football players were rewarded for their performances in Saturday’s win over Savannah State, as senior linebacker Deon King was named MEAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week and junior kicker Cameron Marouf was selected MEAC Special Teams Player of the Week by the conference office.
King racked up 17 tackles, including one for lost yardage, in the Spartans’ 20-17 overtime victory. The FCS national leader in total tackles, King increased his season total to 131 (14.6 per game) and notched his fifth game with at least 15 this year. This marks King’s second MEAC Defensive Player of the Week award this season, as he also was honored following NSU’s win over Hampton in September.
King shared this week’s MEAC award with North Carolina Central’s Darius Spruill.
Marouf was the biggest hero in the victory over SSU, kicking the game-winning 38-yard field goal in overtime to win the game. Earlier, Marouf sent the game into the extra period tied at 17-all after kicking a 41-yard field goal with 2:28 left in the fourth quarter. Marouf also made both of his extra point attempts to finish with eight total points in the game. He is now 6-of-8 on field goal tries this year, and 17-of-19 on PATs.
This is the third time Marouf has been honored by the MEAC in his career. He picked up one Special Teams Player of the Week award last year and was Rookie of the Week on one occasion as a freshman in 2013.
