ORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women’s basketball team plays its final preseason tuneup on Monday night at Echols Hall, as the Spartans host Virginia Union for a 6 p.m. exhibition game. Admission is free.
Monday marks the Spartans’ final test before opening the 2015-16 regular season at home on Friday against USC Upstate. That game also tips off at 6 p.m. at Echols Hall.
The Spartans bring back eight letterwinners and two starters from last year’s 14-16 team that went 11-5 in the MEAC and advanced to the conference tournament semifinals. Leading the returners is sophomore forward Kayla Roberts, the 2015 MEAC Rookie of the Year. Roberts, who was voted last month to the preseason All-MEAC first team, averaged 12.2 points and a MEAC-leading 9.6 rebounds per game last season. Also back is junior guard Koryn Lawrence, who was third on the team last year with a 9.9 points-per-game scoring average.
NSU also debuts five new players this season, freshmen guards Alexys Long and Yazmen Hannah, junior college transfers Ashanta Doby and Kiara Phillips, and La Salle graduate transfer Siobhan Beslow.
VUU, of the CIAA, is coming off a 79-67 exhibition win over Central Methodist University of Missouri last Wednesday.
