SMYRNA, Del. – Norfolk State sophomore Haileyesus Demsie earned his first career All-MEAC cross country honor, as he paced the Spartans to a third-place team finish on Saturday morning at the MEAC Cross Country Championships at the Delaware State Outreach and Research Center.

Demsie placed 12th overall on the 8,000-meter course with a time of 26 minutes, 37.60 seconds. He led the Spartans, competing in their first MEAC championship race since 2013, to a third-place finish with 94 total points. They finished behind repeat champion Maryland Eastern Shore (25 points) and runner-up North Carolina A&T (69).

Redshirt sophomore David Kibet was NSU’s next-highest finisher, placing 16th in a time of 27:00.70. Kibet just finished outside of All-MEAC status, as the top 15 runners earn that distinction.

NSU runners occupied 21st through 23rd places. Junior William Brown Jr. was 21st in a time of 27:28.40. Junior Desmond Fogg was just behind in 27:31.40, and freshman Tomas Fantaye rounded out the Spartans’ top five in 27:34.10.

UMES’ Khalil Rmidi Kinini was the men’s overall winner with a time of 25:00.50.
