RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Department of Juvenile Justice is seeking new and reallocated funding to house young offenders who commit serious violent crimes in new juvenile correctional centers.
The proposal was outlined Monday in Richmond at a legislative hearing, according to media reports. The McAuliffe administration is reviewing the plan.
Under the proposal, the state’s two juvenile correctional facilities in the Richmond area would be replaced by smaller facilities. One would be in Richmond and the other in Hampton Roads.
The department is seeking $66 million in new capital funding and reallocation of $16.1 million in current funding to build the two correctional centers. They would have a total of 152 beds to house a declining population of juvenile offenders.
Virginia had 420 juveniles in custody as of Monday.
