RANDLEMAN, N.C. (AP) — Racing legend Richard Petty is endorsing Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson. Sort of.
Carson and Petty appeared together Monday, September 28, at a camp for disabled children established by Petty’s foundation. Petty tells The Associated Press that he’s “not necessarily endorsing him, but we are — you know what I mean?”
The pair posed for pictures together and Petty briefly sat in the driver’s seat of Carson’s campaign bus.
Why does he like Carson? Petty says one of his strengths is that he’s “very humane.”
Carson wouldn’t say directly whether he’s a NASCAR fan. But the Detroit native says he likes “all things cars.” He’s campaigning in North Carolina for two days.
Carson is among more than a dozen major candidates competing for the Republican presidential nomination.
