NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State head football coach Latrell Scott announced on Tuesday that senior linebacker Deon King and junior running back Gerard Johnson have been voted by their teammates as team captains for the 2015 season.

King, an inside linebacker from Reston, Va., is entering his third year as a starter for the Spartans. King is a two-time All-MEAC selection who was second on the team with 106 tackles last season. King earned third-team All-MEAC honors as a sophomore in 2013, and first-team all-conference accolades last year.

Johnson, a tailback from Richmond, Va., is heading into his first season with the Spartans. Johnson transferred to NSU from Old Dominion for the spring 2015 semester and is slated to start for NSU this weekend at Rutgers.

Both King and Johnson distinguished themselves as team leaders early in the squad’s offseason schedule back in January, according to Scott.

“We waited until the end of training camp to vote, so our team could be around each other as much as possible and make an informed decision,” Scott said. “This was pretty close to a unanimous vote from our players. I feel great about the two student-athletes our team picked to represent us as captains this season.”
