EMPORIA, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police say a man was fatally shot by police after he fired a sawed-off shotgun at officers.
The shooting occurred Wednesday night at a residence in Greensville County.
State police said Thursday 53-year-old Jeffery O. Adkins was outside the residence when troopers arrived to help the Greensville County Sheriff’s Office serve an emergency custody order.
State police say Adkins refused to comply with commands to surrender the shotgun. Negotiators then were sent to the scene.
About three hours later, Adkins fired at officers after state police used a diversionary device in an attempt to compel him to drop the shotgun. A trooper and deputy returned fire.
Adkins later died at a hospital in Emporia.
State police are investigating the shooting.
