NORFOLK, Va. – The No. 19 Norfolk State bowling team will compete for a conference crown when the Spartans take part in the 2015 MEAC Championship beginning on Friday at the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake.
The tournament runs from Friday through Sunday. The qualifying rounds of traditional play begin on Friday at 9:15 a.m., followed by Baker action on Saturday in a bracket format starting at 9 a.m. The championship match will begin at noon on Sunday and will be tape-delayed on ESPNU for later this month.
In addition to the championship, NSU will have six student-athletes honored during the tournament with their MEAC All-Academic certificates. Seniors Delilah Bethel, Courtney Brown, Ashley Buck, Courtney Williford and Kelsea Yarbrough and junior Carrie Hickey all will be recognized by the conference office thanks to having a 3.0 or better GPA.
Only Coppin State, with seven, will have more honorees than Norfolk State. Sophomores, juniors and seniors, as well as transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the institution for at least one year, are eligible to be named MEAC All-Academic.
The AMF Lanes is located at 112 East Medical Parkway, just off Battlefield Blvd. The teams will occupy the last dozen or more lanes of the 40-lane facility. For more information about the championship, click on the MEAC’s championship manual.
The Spartans enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed in the MEAC Southern Division after finishing 13-11 in conference play this year. NSU, which stands 55-34 overall, came in third in the division behind leader North Carolina A&T (20-4) and Bethune-Cookman (15-9). It marked the first time in five years the Spartans did not win the division title.
Florida A&M (12-12) also advanced from the South. In the North, league leader UMES (29-1) will be joined by Delaware State (23-7), Howard (16-14) and Morgan State (16-14) at this year’s championship.
Only the top four teams from the Northern and Southern divisions advance to the MEAC Championship.
Hickey leads the way for NSU with a 182.1 average on the season in 39 traditional games. Bethel (181.6) and Yarbrough (180.6) also average better than 180 on the season, while Brown (179.4) and Buck (174.9) round out the regular starting five for the Spartans.
Barring a bid to the NCAA Championship, this will mark NSU’s last competition of the 2014-15 season.
