Spartan Women celebrate Senior Night, host Delaware State on Monday

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women’s basketball team caps the home portion of its 2014-15 schedule on Monday when it hosts Delaware State. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Echols Hall.

The Spartans will honor their four seniors – Ebony BrownAivah ParhamJazamine Gray and Rae Corbo – following the game. 

The Spartans are 10-14 overall and 9-4 in the MEAC after a 67-57 win at Coppin State on Saturday which snapped NSU’s 18-game losing streak to the Eagles. The win also clinched NSU’s first winning MEAC regular-season record since 2001-02, the year the Spartans won the MEAC Tournament title.

NSU currently sits in third place headed into tonight’s game, trailing Hampton (10-2) by two games in the loss column and Savannah State (9-3) by one. North Carolina A&T (8-4) and Bethune-Cookman (8-5) are close behind NSU. The top three finishers in the regular-season standings earn first-round byes in the MEAC Tournament, which runs March 9-14 at the Norfolk Scope.

Scouting Delaware State
The Lady Hornets are 5-20 overall, 2-10 in the MEAC (13th place) following a 74-61 loss at Hampton on Saturday. That game extended DSU’s losing streak to four games. The Lady Hornets are led by senior forward Tierra Hawkins, who is averaging team highs of 17.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Amber Bogard averages 12.3 points per outing.

Series vs. Delaware State
DSU leads the all-time series with NSU, 22-16. But the Spartans have won four of the last five meetings in the series, including a 57-48 win on Jan. 13, 2014 in Dover, Del., in the last matchup.

Fond Farewell
The Spartans will honor their quarter of seniors following Monday’s game, which was moved up to a 4 p.m. start to accommodate the live 7 p.m. telecast of the NSU-DSU men’s game.
