RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Commonwealth University is planning to examine why fewer black students from the Richmond area attend the school despite diverse in its undergraduate enrollment.
Officials say the university has seen a decline in applications, acceptances and enrollments of under-represented minorities. The sharpest drop has been in black students from the Richmond area.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1Do6rRm ) that VCU has seen a 32 percent decline in black students who enrolled from area schools during the past four years.
Retired university president Eugene Trani will co-chair a task force studying enrollment trends that will focus on 21 school districts in central Virginia.
VCU also plans to bring in a national consultant to study why its faculty is not as diverse as its student body.
