NORFOLK, Va. – On the heels of her best game as a Spartan, Norfolk State freshman Kayla Roberts added two more conference honors to her growing list of accolades on Monday.

Roberts was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week Monday, her fifth such honor of the season. She also doubles as this week’s MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, the first time she has earned that award.

Roberts averaged 19.5 points and 16.0 rebounds in NSU’s two games last week. Highlighting her week was a 26-point, 25-rebound effort in the Spartans’ 71-66 overtime win over Hampton on Saturday. In addition to career highs in points and rebounds, Roberts also had a career-best three blocks as NSU broke a 17-game losing streak to the five-time defending MEAC champions from Hampton.

The 25 rebounds are the second-most in NSU’s Division I era behind Rachel Gordon‘s 26 in November of 2013. No NSU player has had at least 25 points and 25 rebounds in the same game since Stephanie Palmer against Johnson C. Smith in December of 1989.

Roberts also had 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals in the Spartans’ two-point loss at Savannah State last Monday. She is averaging 11.3 points (14th in the MEAC) and 9.1 rebounds (second in MEAC) this year for the Spartans, who are tied for second in the MEAC at 6-3 entering Saturday’s 4 p.m. home game against Howard.
