RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) – Former Gov. Bob McDonnell’s law license has been suspended as a result of his conviction on 11 federal corruption charges, the Virginia State Bar announced Friday.

The State Bar’s disciplinary board made the decision Jan. 23. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, McDonnell is ordered to appear before the board on Feb. 20 to defend his license from being suspended further or revoked. The former governor, however, is scheduled to begin his two-year prison term Feb. 9. His wife Maureen will be sentenced the same day McDonnell is supposed to attend the hearing.

A public notice stated his license has already been administratively suspended because he hasn’t paid his dues since October.

McDonnell has asked the court for bond so he can stay free while he appeals the 11 counts of corruption. Federal prosecutors say  his appeal of his corruption convictions doesn’t present any arguments strong enough to warrant allowing him to remain free on bail.

McDonnell was also sentenced to two years probation, following his release, for accepting $177,000 in gifts, vacations and loans from businessman Jonnie Williams Sr., in exchange for promoting health products made by Williams’ company.
