
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Kaydianne McKenzie and Brianna Hayes highlighted a strong showing for the Norfolk State women’s field athletes with event victories Saturday at the University of North Carolina Open.
Both McKenzie and Hayes recorded season-best marks in their signature events en route to first-place finishes. McKenzie, a senior, won the triple jump with a best leap of 38 feet, 6 inches. Hayes, a freshman, cleared a season-best 5-7 to win the high jump.
The Spartans had three other top-10 finishes in field events. Junior Kiara Howell was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 42-2.75. McKenzie also placed seventh in the long jump (17-5.5) and sophomore Te’Shaibrah Myles finished seventh in the pole vault with a top height of 10 feet.
The Spartans also recorded three top-five finishes on the track. Senior Torie Cunningham clocked a time of 7.76 seconds en route to fourth place in the 60 meters. Senior Brittney McCants placed fourth in the 200 meters (25.77) and junior Jazmine Vaughan was fifth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.91).
The Spartans will compete in a pair of meets next weekend, with the squad split between the Penn State National and the Captains Invitational at CNU.
