NORFOLK, Va. – Three Norfolk State football players and new Spartans’ head coach Latrell Scott recently earned all-state honors for their efforts during the 2014 season.

Linebacker Lynden Trail (first team), defensive end Deon King and safety Keenan Lambert (both second team) were voted to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division (Division I) all-state team. Scott was tabbed as the VaSID College Division (Division II/III) Co-Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

Trail earned a spot on the all-state first team for Division I FBS and FCS players for the second year in a row, while King and Lambert earned VaSID recognition for the first time in their careers. The trio was key to the Spartans finishing second in the nation (FCS) in total defense.

Trail, a three-time All-MEAC pick, had 91 tackles, 11.5 for loss and five sacks. King, who also earned All-MEAC first-team honors, racked up 106 tackles, 18 for loss, and 7.5 sacks. Lambert, who was also a first-team All-MEAC selection, led the Spartans with three interceptions while also tallying 52 tackles and nine pass deflections.

Scott continues to be lauded for leading Virginia State to a memorable 2014 campaign. The Trojans went 10-3, won the CIAA conference title, and earned the first NCAA Division II playoff win in school history last fall. Scott shared the VaSID College Division award this year with Curt Newsome, head coach of Division III Emory & Henry.

Scott had previously been named the 2014 CIAA Coach of the Year. He will also be recognized this week for the second straight year as the winner of the Willard Bailey Award, given annually by the Touchdown Club of Richmond to the state’s Division II/III Coach of the Year.
