2 Norfolk baggage handlers sentenced for stealing from bags

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Two baggage handlers have been sentenced to prison for their roles in a conspiracy to steal items from passengers’ bags at Norfolk International Airport.

Media outlets report that 26-year-old Chris Arthur Perry was sentenced Monday, March 14, to one year and five months in prison. Twenty-eight-year-old Gregory Paul Wingard Jr. was sentenced to one year and one day.

According to documents filed with a previous plea agreement in federal court, the two broke into checked baggage and removed money, electronics and other items that they sold to members of the community or pawn shops. In court Monday, prosecutor Joseph DePadilla described it as “wholesale pilfering.”

Another baggage handler, Donte Chandler, will be sentenced Wednesday for a similar scheme involving the theft of an iPad from a sailor.
