NORFOLK, Va. – Former Norfolk State University linebackers Deon King and Lynden Trail will continue their professional football careers in the NFL this season on the practice squads of the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, respectively.
King was the leading tackler for the Cowboys through the team’s four preseason games this August. He made 19 total stops, including 15 solo tackles and two tackles for loss. King is entering his rookie year in the NFL after earning consensus first-team FCS All-America accolades last season at NSU, where he starred from 2012-15. The three-time All-MEAC performer signed as a free agent with the Cowboys this past spring.
Trail will be entering his second season on the Washington practice squad. He made nine tackles in four preseason games for the Redskins this August. Trail, a three-time FCS All-American at NSU from 2012-14, was originally signed as a free agent by the Houston Texans out of college before joining Washington in 2015.
NSU currently has three players under contract with NFL teams. Former Spartan Don Carey (2005-08) is entering his eighth year in the NFL and sixth as a defensive back with the Detroit Lions. Carey played in all 16 games for Detroit last year, making 21 tackles as a reserve safety and special teams standout. He is on the Lions’ 53-man active roster for their season-opener on Sunday at Indianapolis.
