Chesapeake Bay search underway for fishing boat captain

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — The Coast Guard is searching for the captain of a fishing vessel who apparently fell overboard near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.

The Coast Guard’s Portsmouth station says it received a report early Sunday from two crewmembers aboard the 31-foot boat. They told the guard they believed the captain had fallen into the water between 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

The vessel was anchored south of Fisherman’s Island and east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

The Coast Guard dispatched a 45-foot response boat from Station Cape Charles and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from North Carolina. A cutter, the Shearwater, is also involved in the search.

The water temperature in the vicinity of the search is 66 degrees. Visibility is about 10 miles.
